All about the dialysis procedure: how does it work?
Hemodialysis is essential for patients facing renal failure as it replaces a missing and important organ: the kidneys, which normally perform their vital work uninterruptedly 24 hours a day, every day.
The extracorporeal therapy for kidney failure refers to a method where fluid and solutes are removed from or added to the patient’s blood. This process takes place outside of the body. This means that the patient’s blood is continuously circulated through a hemodialyzer (an artificial semi permeable membrane which mimics the glomerular membrane of the kidney), and then is returned to the patient. A typical dialyzer is made of several thousands of parallel hollow fibers which separate the blood from the dialysate.
This process is achieved with a hemodialysis machine of special ultramodern technology carrying out the complicated procedure of filtering the human blood in a safe and effective way.
Dialysis machines are provided with many important features ensuring the proper and safe delivery of blood and dialysate fluid to the filter, where the crucial exchange of water and uremic toxins take place. Features include a pump to deliver blood to the dialyzer at a constant rate (300-500ml/min), monitors to ensure that the pressures in the extracorporeal circuit are not excessive, detectors for blood leakage or air, a pump to deliver the dialysate fluid for the exchange of waste products etc.
The dialysis procedure removes solutes by diffusion - based on concentration gradients- between blood and dialysate fluid across a semi permeable membrane. Modern dialyzers are biocompatible, in order to avoid anaphylactic reactions of the patient. This is what makes the process absolutely safe.
In order to create this concentration gradient a dialysate fluid is delivered by special pumps to the dialyzers. This fluid typically includes electrolytes, like Na, K, Ca, HCO3, GLUCOSE, CL, Mg, etc.
As the blood is cleared via this concentration gradient with the dialysate, the waste products are removed through separate tubes of the dialysis machine and the filtered blood returns back to the human body.
